It's one of the world's oldest performance name plates- and despite being rich with history, it's been out of the market for decades. As one Buick historian puts it, "the name Super, evoking the glamour and elegance of rail travel of the late '30s, harks back to a time when America was on the upswing, having weathered the trials of the Great Depression, but had not seen the horrors of a second world war that was on the horizon."

The badge is back for 2008, and it's coming to a showroom near you.

The 2008 Buick LaCrosse Super will hit dealers this summer, and the Super badge will also be worn by Lucerne models. GM says the Super treatment will bring elevated levels of design and luxury to the machines, as well as fuel-efficient V8 power.

For instance, the LaCrosse Super will find itself powered by GM's 5.3 litre V8 with 300 horsepower and active fuel management- for an optimal blend of power and economy. The carmaker says the engine goes like a V8 but drinks only as much as a V6.

The Lucerne Super makes due with a Northstar 4.6 litre V8 with 292 horsepower- 6 percent more than current models. It's an engine renowned for smooth and quiet operation. Coupled with a specially tuned version of the sedans magnetic ride control system, the Lucerne Super guarantees inspiring performance and crisp yet comfortable handling.

Both models also feature exclusive QuietTuning technology- which is designed to block or reduce noise which would otherwise enter the cabin.
